PRK(Photorefractive Keratectomy)/LASEK (LASer Epithelial Keratomileusis)

With the PRK and the LASEK methods a small part of superficial cornea is vaporized. The result is that the curvature of the cornea is modified in such a manner that a sharper image is projected on the retina. The sight improves because of this.

Preceding the treatment a small layer of the epithelium, at the outer part of the eye, is removed. In the LASEK procedure this layer is returned after the laser treatment. With the PRK method this is not done; the layer restores itself.

Suited for:

  • shortsightedness: -1 up to –5 diopter.

Advantages:

  • short, day treatment.

Disadvantages:

  • The treatment is performed on the central part of the cornea which is essential for a clear sight; but it is not reversible.

  • It takes 1 to 2 months before you have a good sight again.
